tri-cultural exchange.

November 29, 2010

google “american food” or “american dishes”. Outside of hot dogs, hamburgers, and barbeque you want find much.

However, one of the uniquely awesome things about America is that we are a melting pot of cultures, and we have taken a lot of different culinary traditions and put an american twist to them. One of those traditions is mexican food. Most americans have tried the americanized form of mexican food or even have it on a daily basis, and its something that most Moldovans have never tried. Its also something I dearly miss. A chipotle burrito, chips, and guacamole will be in my hands within 24 hours of my arrival back to America.

Part of my job is to give Moldovans access to our culture. Its one of Peace Corp’s three goals. Thus, this saturday, I put in a full day of overtime preparing a mexican feast in a neighboring village with my friend for his host family and our romanian tutor. It took quite a bit of time, but we really pulled out the stops, and I got to say, my cooking skills have definitely improved. It was a feel good day of realizing how far both my language and cooking skills have come.  We shared some great food, some christmas music (we had just got our first decent snow fall), and it was one of those days where it was just really good to be a volunteer. Here are some pictures, enjoy!

Mexican culture through american culture to moldovan culture. We are a walking UN. Poftim!
